The Man, and we've invited some of the band's most avid New York City fans to a free show at The Bowery Ballroom. One of the central missions of Pandora is to bring together bands and fans. We've been successfully doing that online for some time now, so it's exciting to see this offline component now coming to life! We've started a special page on Pandora so that fans across the country can follow the series. Check out www.pandora.com/pandorapresents to see…

Earlier this week we released our Best of 2011 charts. 2011 saw you spend over 71 thousand years listening to music and scrobble more than 11 billion tracks. We’ve been churning through all of this data to find out what truly defined 2011. New for this year is the discoveries chart. We went back to the beginning of time (well, to 2003) and checked every one of your 61 billion scrobbles to work out which artists were first scrobbled in 2011. We’ve also broken these charts down by country and tag. Whatever you’re interested in, from experimental music in Mexico, the latest innovations in…

  • Hometown town hall...

    13 Dec 2011 | 1:47 pm
We had a great get-together last Thursday in our very own hometown of Oakland, CA at a perfect spot called Preservation Park, right downtown. A really large crowd showed up, loaded with lots of questions and comments: There were many questions about how we decide what music goes in Pandora, and on how artists are paid - including from a number of musicians whose music is on Pandora. There were also questions and suggestions about advertising on our site - is it targeted? For example, one married attendee asked about the frequency of dating site ads...I assured her this wasn't a hint of any…

    1 Nov 2011 | 8:34 am
I have lost count of the number of times a Pandora listener has told me that they learned about our service from their hair dresser, dentist, barista or bartender. I've also been saving a long list of emails from business owners, large and small, who have written to us in growing numbers since we launched Pandora asking when we might offer Pandora for use in a commercial setting. I'm really excited to be able to tell these folks that we now have an offering just for them. We have recently established a partnership with a company called DMX. They're an innovator in the commercial music space…
  • Milwaukee Town Hall

    14 Oct 2011 | 5:59 pm
Great town hall last night in Milwaukee at the Iron Horse. In spite of rain and a Brewers playoff game we had a full house (though we ended in time for folks to see the last few innings, Brewers leading by one). Lots of great conversation as usual, including quite a bit of discussion about the advertising on Pandora. Listeners clearly have a desire to find different ways to interact with the ads - book marking them, saving for later, expressing preferences on their favorite kind of ads, etc. It was really interesting to survey listeners on their usage. In a show of hands, a substantial…

    12 Oct 2011 | 4:01 pm
I had the rare treat of meeting with, and presenting Pandora and the Music Genome Project to the scientist who actually discovered DNA, Dr. James Watson. He's a wonderful man with an obvious curiosity, and some very strong opinions about Chinese opera! Had a terrific time touring the Cold Spring Harbor facility out on Long Island, where a global assembly of some of the world's brightest natural scientists come together to do bench research. We convened for a town hall in a seminar room full of biologists and their friends to talk Genome. It was certainly an unusual town hall with a whole new…

    5 Sep 2011 | 2:01 am
UPDATE: Site is back up. Also forgot to mention that the -video search flag is also working again. Hey Everybody, First off, we’d like to thank everyone for their patience. We know this transition hasn’t been handled well and that getting Grooveshark tracks integrated took longer than we and you would have liked. That said, there are now nearly 1MM pristine MP3 tracks available via our search in partnership with Grooveshark’s api. Again, we know this is in no way a replacement for the tracks that are now unavailable, but we hope that it will at least serve as an initial…

Why Crowd Source? Tonight’s maintenance includes the first phase of something we’re really excited about: crowd sourcing search results. Most of you have probably experienced the frustration of finding someone singing a cover version of a song or a poor quality live version filmed from a cellphone instead of the track you were looking for. If all youtube videos had some sort of metadata that identified it as a cover or a live version (or even if people titled things similarly), we could do this ourselves. Unfortunately, that’s not the case; so we need your help! Phase 1:…

Every year when Best of rolls around, we look at the chart to see if our data could have predicted who’d make it big. While there are a few in there we saw coming * cough * Adele * cough * the reality is that every year things get harder and harder to foresee. That’s one of the reasons we launched our New Discoveries chart; to show off just how diverse your year in music really is. Sure, it’s full of credible indie acts; Purity Ring, Death Grips and Work Drugs all did fairly well, while Wugazi – an album of mash-ups between Wu Tang Clan and Fugazi – made it to…

    12 Jan 2012 | 1:50 am
Best of 2011 is a reflection of the year in music, highlighting the most popular and hottest new artists all based on the tracks you’ve been scrobbling. This year’s ‘Top Artists’ chart was compiled by looking at scrobbles for albums released between 1st January and 31st December 2011. As in previous years, we aren’t counting live albums, greatest hits collections, EP’s and singles. You might not be all that surprised when you see who’s sat at number one, but dig a little deeper using our lovely new Country and Tag filtering options to find the No. 1 which…

So every time you listen to a track, we want to know – be it on Spotify, your smartphone, your iPod, your Xbox, iTunes or anything else that you play music on. We do this by letting all these websites, phones and devices “scrobble”. Scrobbling means that with your permission, we are sent a message every time you listen to a track. There are already over 600 websites, phones, applications and hardware…

    Top Artists on Rhapsody Online

  • Skrillex

    27 Jan 2012 | 5:06 am
Sonny Moore started out as the frontman for Epitaph-signed L.A. hardcore outfit From First to Last, but ravers know him best for the explosive, abrasive music he records as Skrillex. While he's sometimes affiliated with dubstep's wing of American upstarts, his music has little in common with the spacious, dubwise beats of London's basement raves; stuffed with careening synthesizers, industrial-strength drums and helter-skelter digital effects, it favors jagged edges over meditative bass. These 4/4 beats and cascading riffs have just as much to do with trance and electro-house, so it's no…
  • Foster The People

    26 Jan 2012 | 9:55 pm
L.A. trio Foster the People work every catchy element in the hip-kid's handbook. Frontman Mark Foster, drummer Mark Pontius and bassist Cubbie Fink formed the band in late 2009, after Foster started earning a healthy living as a composer for TV and commercials; touches of MGMT's kitschy pop, Passion Pit's relentless synth-bounce, and Peter Bjorn and John's catchy dream pop fill their debut album, 2011's Torches. With those comparisons in place, it's no wonder the band landed a dream gig at Coachella 2011 before the album even came out, mostly thanks to the success of debut single "Pumped Up…
  • Etta James

    26 Jan 2012 | 9:55 pm
From the mid-1950s to the present, Etta James' powerful, soul-charged voice has become deeper and rougher, with a rich texture and heartfelt inflections. It goes without saying that the woman known as "Mama" is aging like California wine, and she can still open wounds in her songs and come out standing strong. When she was five years old, Jamesetta Hawkins amazed the congregation of her church choir. When she belted out Gospel songs with absolute spiritual fervor, it was clear that the child was a musical prodigy. Her career as a singer began when she recorded "The Wallflower" with Johnny…
  • Adele

    26 Jan 2012 | 9:54 pm
British soul-pop chanteuse Adele (nee Adele Laurie Blue Adkins) is a stunning young talent with a huge voice. After she recorded a few songs, a friend set up a MySpace page for her in early 2005; record execs discovered her there in their hunt for the "next Lily Allen." After signing to XL, she suffered from a terribly ill-timed case of writer's block -- that is until she fell in and out of love. A breakup opened the floodgates of emotion and creativity, resulting in her debut album 19. Inspired by great soul dames like Etta James and Billie Holiday and other singers such as Bjork, Jeff…

Egged on by his grandfather, Buble became a showbiz kid who loved performing and at age 17 he won the top prize in the Canadian Youth Talent Search. After releasing a number of independent albums, Buble went stateside and joined the touring company of the much-praised Broadway show Swing. After being featured as a nightclub singer in the movie Totally Blonde (2001), Buble signed to Reprise Records -- the label started by Sinatra - and released his…

  • The other Woman: CREEP

    Ben Brown
    28 Jan 2012 | 2:00 am
Presented by Ruth Barnes, The Other Woman is the only radio show in the UK with an all-female playlist. — This week we kick off the show with this creepy-as-hell track from Brooklyn duo, er, Creep! Featuring the ethereal vocals of Holly Miranda – an excellent singer songwriter in her own right. We feature an interview with Portland musician Laura Gibson whose album La Grande has just come out on City Slang. She played an over-subscribed gig at The Social in London a few weeks back where we caught up with her – in the middle of the bar! Nowhere to go, so it’s a bit chaotic.
  • Your New Favourite Band #73: Midi Matilda

    Ben Brown
    27 Jan 2012 | 10:32 am
This neon, electro-pop beauty comes courtesy of San Franciscan two piece, Midi Matilda. The track above, Day Dreams is playful from the first note before it grows into a pounding clatter of rhythms and soaring falsetto vocals. We’ve also included the video below which was shot by the guys in the band. It was first filmed in the studio and then projected onto thousands of surfaces around San Francisco and Berkeley. The video was then created using stop-frame animation using 3,300 photos. Pretty sweet. Check out more from the band at their amazingtunes.com profile.
  • Your New favourite Band #72 :SEASFIRE

    Ben Brown
    25 Jan 2012 | 10:07 am
Following a big musical movement, there is always the inevitable fallout of imitation. Endless and often painful imitation. In the wake of post-dubstep there has been many a James Blake copy. However, sometimes artists get it oh-so-right; taking influence and making it entirely their own. SEASFIRE are just such a band. Capturing intimacy in the haunting and melancholic beat and matching it with a clean and more immediate vocal. An assault of fuzz almost threatens to disrupt Falling before dropping back into eerie minimalism. It just adds to the tension of the track. Always hinting to grow…

  • Craig Finn - Clear Heart Full Eyes

    23 Jan 2012 | 4:54 am
Craig Finn describes himself as the kind of writer who sits in the back seat of the car driven by his characters, taking notes. For the sake of his sanity and general health, this is doubtless a good thing. On Lord, I’m Discouraged, a song from The Hold Steady’s 2008 album Stay Positive, the Minnesota-born resident of Brooklyn profiles an unrequited love whose life is sliding into the despair of drug addiction. "The sutures and bruises are none of my business / She says that she’s sick but won’t get specific," he sings, later adding: "I know it’s unlikely she’ll…
  • Howler - America Give Up

    18 Jan 2012 | 10:42 am
It would make it easy for lazy critics if Howler proved to be a real dog of a band, causing pre-release naysayers to howl with laughter. But the tipped Minneapolis mob has delivered a succinct and energetic debut album that casts aside any doubts as to their qualities. Having turned heads with a series of fiery (and fleeting) live shows, frontman Jordan Gatesmith’s crew have wasted little time in realising an album of thoroughly contagious, albeit fairly derivative, Strokes-flavoured gutter-rock. These 11 tracks zip by, dashing from start to finish in a breathtaking 32 minutes. There may be…
  • Beverley Knight - Soul UK

    8 Jan 2012 | 9:47 am
The covers album is a noble tradition: a chance for an artist to pay tribute to their roots, to avoid writing any new material, and to present their listeners with songs that everyone knows they like already, because they’ve heard them. From Bowie to George Michael, John Legend to Paul Weller, a covers set is a chance to tell people where you’re coming from and, often, to pause for breath while you work out where you’re going to next. Beverly Knight is a brilliant soul singer, who grew up at a time when black British music wasn’t as united as it is in these days of grime riding high…
  • The Little Willies - For The Good Times

    7 Jan 2012 | 3:55 am
Two albums in eight years might not sound like a particularly great level of productivity – but The Little Willies are no ordinary band. A collective ostensibly fronted by Norah Jones, albeit with ample vocal support from Arden-born folk singer Richard Julian, this outfit came together in 2003 to jam out some much-loved country cuts at New York’s Living Room venue. A debut, self-titled album emerged in 2006, featuring tracks penned by the likes of Kris Kristofferson (Best of All Possible Worlds), Townes Van Zandt (No Place to Fall) and, perhaps inevitably given their chosen moniker,…
  • Green Day - 39/Smooth

    26 Dec 2011 | 3:16 am
In 1995 Billie Joe Armstrong wrote a song about a scene populated by people he once considered his friends. 86 appeared on Insomniac, its authors’ tightly coiled and deeply troubled fourth album, which itself succeeded Dookie, the multi-platinum release that had the world telling Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool that while their band was cute its music was not punk. The fact that just three years prior to their elevation to Millionaires’ Row the Oakland-based trio found themselves on a tour of European squats that saw their frontman contract body lice was neither here nor there.
